Vital role for wetlands

Journal Article · · J. - Water Pollut. Control Fed.; (United States)

This article describes the trend toward preservation and creative exploitation of wetlands for their water quality and flood control benefits. The US has lost over half of its original 215 million acres of wetlands due to earlier agricultural policies that encouraged conversion of wetlands to crop lands or to ecologically unsound flood control policies. Amoco Oil Company refinery is cited for its use of bio-oxidation ponds to augment its waste treatment systems. Alaska has developed a comprehensive wetlands management plan. Louisiana's wetlands mitigation efforts may require many years. Techniques are being developed there to repair damage caused by natural erosion, and by flood control levees and canals constructed by the oil and gas industries.
