The hearings on S.419 were conducted to investigate whether or not oil shale is a national asset; they were held in Denver, Colo. on Mar. 11 and Rifle, Colo. Mar. 14, 1977 and in Washington, D.C. April 1 and 28, 1977. Among other things, S. 419 sets up a committee to monitor the environmental and social effects of oil shale development. The bill provides for subsidies to communities that are economically and environmentally impacted. Colorado Senator Floyd Haskell, who introduced the bill, presented the opening statement. Fourty-three statements were heard during the four days of the hearings. (MCW)
