Combating splash zone corrosion

Corrosion protection offshore steel structure in the near-surface sea splash zone is examined. It was found that Monel 400 sheathing offers protection to offshore structures. Service experience to date and the most relevant laboratory and field trial data qualitatively indicate that a sheathing of Monel alloy 400 provides excellent protection to offshore hot oil riser pipes against corrosion in the splash zone. It is hoped that by the end of 1977 to quantify these observations with data from controlled laboratory trials and from measurements on sheathed risers that are performing satisfactorily after up to nine years in service.
