Flooding with micellar dispersions

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7093203
Oil recovery from a reservoir with a relative high concentration of divalent ions is improved by flooding with a micellar solution having a relatively low equivalent weight (average equivalent weight 300 to 450) petroleum sulfonate. The micellar solution is preceded and protected by injection of an aqueous preslug having a controlled ion content, especially at the trailing edge of the preslug. The micellar slug can be either oil-external or water-external and consists of an aqueous medium, low average equivalent weight sulfonate, hydrocarbon, cosurfactant, and electrolyte. A mobility buffer follows the micellar slug and consists of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solution, Dow Pusher 530. The drivewater is separated from the micellar slug by the mobility buffer. Recoveries from laboratory tests on Berea sandstone cores ranged up to 83.6 percent and were lower with higher equivalent-weight sulfonates.
