Choosing the right floods for polymer treatment

Relationships between crude oil viscosity, residual oil concentration, WOR, porosity and permeability are described graphically. Residual oil increases as the viscosity of the reservoir crude increases. Use of a polymer flood containing partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide in Bartlesville sand cores improved coverage (oil recovery) by 24 percent. For a specific polymer flood viscosity, the amount of polymer required decreases as its molecular weight increases. The flood viscosity can be increased by decreasing TDS below 50,000 mg/l and also by decreasing the permeability variation of the reservoir. The recovery efficiency increases as the flood viscosity increases.
