Oil recovery method using steam stimulation of subterranean formation
Patent

OSTI ID:7093153
It was proposed that a solution containing an oil and water miscible organic liquid, a cationic quaternary amine surfactant and/or a nonionic water-soluble surfactant be injected into a reservoir before steam injection for oil recovery. The organic liquid (e.g., Butyl Cellosolve, an ethylene glycol monobutyl ether) decreases clay swelling in the reservoir by removing the water from the clay. To protect the clay from further swelling, the cationic surfactant (e.g., Ethoquad C/25, a polyethoxylated coconut acid residue--quaternary ammonium chloride salt) was used. Addition of the nonionic surfactant (e.g., Igepal CO-630, a polyethoxylated nonyl phenol) demulsifies the crude and reservoir water. Steam can then be added to reduce crude viscosity and drive the flood.
