This patent describes a process for the mitigation and control of air pollution caused by the emission of nitric oxide in effluent vent, flue or exhaust gas, the process comprising the removal of nitric oxide from such effluent vent, flue or exhaust gas. It comprises: scrubbing the gas in a column comprising means both for scrubbing and electrolyzing, with an acid stream comprising aqueous nitric acid to solubilize and remove nitric oxide from the gas, the means comprising packing material that is electrically conductive, while subjecting the nitric acid stream containing the thus solubilized nitric oxide to electrolysis in the column.
