Decays of mesons into 4..pi../sup 0/ mesons have been studied with the purpose of searching for glueballs, decay of which by this channel should be enhanced in comparison with ordinary qq-bar mesons. The experiment (NA12) was carried out with high statistical accuracy in the SPS accelerator at CERN. The multiphoton spectrometer GAMS-4000 was used for detection of the eight ..gamma.. rays from decay of ..pi../sup 0/ mesons. A new meson X(1810) with spin-parity J/sup P//sup C/ = 2/sup + +/, a possible tensor glueball with mass 1806 +- 10 MeV and width 190 +- 20 MeV, produced with a cross section sigma(..pi../sup -/p..-->..Xn)xBR(X..-->..4..pi../sup 0/) = 8 +- 2 nb, was observed. Its decay by the 2..pi../sup 0/ channel is suppressed: 2..pi../sup 0//4..pi../sup 0/<1/4. In the mass spectrum of 4..pi../sup 0/ systems the G(1590) meson, which is a probable scalar glueball, was observed. The measured value BR(G..-->..4..pi../sup 0/)/BR(G..-->..etaeta) = 0.8 +- 0.3 confirms the existence in it of a strong gluon component. The rare decay f(1270)..-->..4..pi../sup 0/, BR( f..-->..4..pi../sup 0/) = (3 +- 1)x10/sup -3/ was observed.
