Production of G(1590) and other mesons which decay into two eta mesons in. pi. /sup -/p collisions at 100 GeV

New data have been obtained on the scalar G(1590) meson which decays into an eta pair. The experiment was carried out in the SPS accelerator at CERN. etaeta pairs were detected by the GAMS-4000 hodoscopic electromagnetic calorimeter on the basis of their decays both into four and into eight ..gamma.. rays. In this decay mode the Epsilon(1300), f (1270), f '(1525), and also the h(2030) meson with spin 4 are observed. Partial widths for decay of these particles into two eta mesons are determined. They agree with values calculated according to the model of QCD and with the predictions of SU(3) symmetry. The existence of structures with spin 0 and 2 in the large-mass region is discussed.
