BIOGAS for Brazil

Journal Article · · IGT GaScope; (United States)

The Brazilian government is using IGT's BIOGAS process as the basis for a new biomass-gasification plant to be constructed at Sao Paulo. Sited adjacent to a wastewater-treatment plant and a composting plant on the bank of the Tiete River, the BIOGAS facility will convert up to 770 tons (700 metric tons)/day of municipal solid wastes (MSW) to methane via anaerobic digestion. The plant will comprise five sections: refuse preparation, MSW-sludge blending, biological gasification, gas purification, and ultimate recovery and disposal. Conditions favorable to the commercialization of BIOGAS in Brazil include the acute shortage of fuel gases, the gas-price structure, and the opportunity to integrate solid and liquid waste disposal with recycling of MSW components and energy production.
