Alaska to export coal to Korea

Two South Korean shipping companies have contracts to ship 800,000 tons of Alaskan coal to the Korea Electric Power Corp. despite the current surplus and soft prices of oil. The contract will initiate Alaska's first coal exports, which could develop into a strong competitor for Pacific Rim business. The Korean companies are sharing the cost of port improvements and coal loading facilities, and are joining other Korean companies in exploration agreements. The state hopes the coal trains will increase rail revenues for the Alaska Railroad.
