Elastic scattering of. pi. /sup -/ mesons and protons by nuclei in the region of the diffraction peak at momenta 30--50 GeV/c

The total and differential cross sections for elastic scattering of ..pi../sup -/ by Li, Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb nuclei at initial momenta 33.5, 39.5, 45.5, and 50.5 GeV/c and of protons at 42.5 GeV/c are measured. The squared 4-momentum transfers ranged from 0.002 to 0.04 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. The nuclear sizes and the ratios of the real and imaginary parts of the forward elastic-scattering amplitudes were determined from the experimental data.
