OSTI ID:7081284
The Fifth International Conference of Directors of Mine Safety Research was held at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa., September 20-25, 1948. Twenty-five items from the Proceedings (1950) have been entered individually into EDB. Topics discussed were: Blasting explosives, especially sheaths and safety (nonignition of methane-air mixtures), detonators, comparative evaluations and methods of testing explosives (comparison of methods used in different countries), toxicity of combustion products, diesel engine use underground (exhaust gases and ignition hazards), methane (combustion kinetics and branching chain process of combustion), use of rock dust (plus water sprays with and without wetting agents), NaCl, CaCl/sub 2/ and rock dust barriers to minimize and suppress methane explosions), experiments on the explosibility of dusts of different coals inluding effects of particle size and volatile matter, an accident in a French coal mine where an explosion of the compressed air system set off a dust explosion, safe electrical equipment and methods of testing and specifying, legislation and regulations, mine roof supports, mine atmosphere sampling and analysis, and prediction of explosibility from the analysis.
