Energy companies hungrily eyeing oil and gas beneath the public lands

It is not clear how much oil and natural gas lies beneath federal land, but the energy industry wants to find out. Environmentalists are ready to challenge them. About a third of the country is owned by the Federal government. Over the past 15 years more than half of this land has been removed from potential energy and mineral development. The withdrawals for the most part have placed the lands in national parks, recreational areas, wildlife refuges, and wilderness areas. A major chunk is in Alaska. The 1980's, the industry contends, will be the critical decade for developing the nation's remaining oil and gas potential. Synthetic fuels and other energy options are not expected to become widely available until the turn of the century. Thus the country's most vulnerable years to foreign oil supply and price manipulation are now.
