Synthesis of some derivatives of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid and their mesomorphous characteristics

Journal Article · · J. Org. Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:7076597

The cis- and trans-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylic, cis-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-cis-2-methylcyclohexane-1-r-carboxylic, and trans-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-trans-2-methylcyclohexane-1-r-carboxylic acids and their 4-cyanophenyl esters were obtained. Unlike the trans isomers, the cis isomers do not exhibit liquid-crystal characteristics. The compounds containing a methyl radical in the cylohexane fragment are characterized by lower temperatures for the formation of the nematic phase than the unsubstituted analogs
