The new NIE: National Institute for the Environment

In this report, the authors describes the newly proposed federal agency called the National Institute for the Environment (NIE). The NIE would focus on environmental science as no other currently existing agency does or can. The author discusses the history of the NIE concept, NIE goals--particularly in the areas of education and training and proposed organization--and ways in which environmental educators can assist the NIE effort. With academic, environmental, and industry groups, the NIE would set priorities for environmental research, education, and training, and assess research findings and describe their implications. The agency would ease access to information about the environment and provide the basis for development of environmentally appropriate technologies.
