It is usually assumed that the production of baryons in [ital B] decays is induced primarily by the process [ital b][r arrow][ital c[bar u]d], where the charm quark hadronizes into a charmed baryon. Motivated by an examination of the [Lambda][sub [ital c]] momentum spectrum in the transition [ital B][r arrow][Lambda][sub [ital c]][ital X], we consider the alternative hypothesis that the production of charmed baryons in [ital B] decays is in fact dominated by the transition [ital b][r arrow][ital c[bar c]s], and is seen primarily in modes with two charmed baryons in the final state. The dominance of such a mechanism would have potentially important implications for the charm deficit'' in [ital B] decays.
