Laying of the submarine North Sea line to connect the westerly platform in the Forties field to a landfall at Cruden Bay is a critical area in British Petroleum Co. Ltd.'s development program. The length of the route is approx. 106 miles. The pipeline of 32-in. 3/4-in. wall X65 grade will be laid for most of its length in water depths between 300 and 400 ft. The problems center on control of buoyancy and tension in the line while laying, to avoid overstressing and possible buckling. Both contracted lay barges were in position during April and work has begun.
