Magnetic drift induced ion-cyclotron maser instability

It is shown that cyclotron maser-type instabilities are possible for ions. Unlike the electron-cyclotron maser instability, the azimuthal bunching mechanism is caused by the magnetic drift rather than relativistic effects. For a delta function distribution, it is found that the extraordinary modes over a wide range of cyclotron harmonic numbers can be destabilized with growth rates comparable to the ion-cyclotron frequency.
