Metallothionein: A potential biomonitor of exposure to environmental toxins

Conference · · Preprints of Papers Presented at National Meeting, Division of Water, Air and Waste Chemistry, American Chemical Society; (USA)

The metal-binding protein, metallothionein (MT), is a potential biomonitor for assessment of exposure of feral animals to environmental toxins. The protein is ubiquitous and is induced not only by zinc and copper but by numerous metals and by stresses which may be associated with environmental pollution. The RIA developed for detection and quantitation of MT has demonstrated its utility in performing this function on all mammalian isoforms studied to date; the ELISA has proved to be a similarly useful complement to the RIA in this regard. Antibodies specific for a particular non-mammalian isoform of interest may be developed to provide the same capability for monitoring possible toxic states in invertebrates and microorganisms.
