A 50-50 coal/oil mixture is burned at a Florida Power Corp. oil-fired boiler in a successful pilot project of the utility and the Dravo Corp. The project began several years ago when the utility sought an economical way to convert existing oil-fired stations to burn coal. The partners plan to sell the technology commercially to other utilities. The process requires no additives, but uses a new type of pulverizer to produce fine particles able to maintain suspension in moving oil. Although no federal money was used to develop the pilot plant, the DOE is funding several demonstrations. Excessive wear on the pulverizer will require some changes of materials and procedures to improve the operation. Most conventional equipment can be retained. Particulate emissions will be controlled by a smaller precipitator than a full coal-fired station requires.
