A Specialized Reclamation Field Test using high volume lateral relocation dirt moving blades, under joint sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines and the Pittsburgh and Midway Coal Mining Co. was initiated in June 1975. Field tests carried out on an area-mined orphan spoil bank proving ground in southeast Kansas indicate the 40 ft angle blade averages 6000 to 6500 bank yd/sup 3/ hourly using 795 net flywheel hp in the push and tow tractors. The 24 ft Vee Plow has demonstrated an earth moving potential of 8,000 to 10,000 bank yd/sup 3/ hourly in topping out area-mined spoil banks, and tests are continuing. The 24 ft grading bar has proved effective in smoothing the shaped land and the combination of these three tools together with conventional bulldozers has proved highly effective in reducing costs associated with shaping and leveling area-mined spoil banks.
