High-efficiency commercial water heater development. Annual report Jan-Dec 83

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7065334
The development of a condensing water heater for commercial applications has been completed. The selected concept consists of a high-efficiency water heater connected by appropriate plumbing to a stratified-temperature storage tank. A number of pre-production prototypes have been fabricated and installed at nine representative commercial sites. Field tests were initiated in April 1983. These consist of a side-by-side comparison with the existing conventional water heater at each site. The test results obtained to date demonstrate standby loss rates less than one-fifth of conventional values and service efficiencies which average 33% higher than conventional system efficiencies. The comparative performance data obtained under actual usage conditions show that the condensing water heater would provide average annual cost savings of $950 per year and corresponding paybacks in the range of 0.6-1.5 years.
