High-efficiency commercial water heater development. Final report, November 1980-August 1984

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5965708
The development of a condensing water heater for commercial applications was completed. The selected concept consists of a high-efficiency water heater connected by appropriate plumbing to a stratified-temperature storage tank. A number of pre-production prototypes were fabricated and installed at nine representative commercial sites. Field tests were initiated in April 1983 and concluded in July 1984. These consisted of a side-by-side comparison with the existing conventional water heater at each site. The final test results obtained demonstrate standby loss rates less than one-fifth of conventional values and service efficiencies which average 32% higher than conventional system efficiencies. The comparative performance data obtained under actual usage conditions show that the condensing water heater would provide average annual cost savings of $920 per year and corresponding paybacks in the range of 0.9-1.5 years.
