Metal speciation. Effects on aquatic toxicity

Research report: Most water quality criteria for metals are presently based on total metal concentrations. A series of algal bioassays was conducted to demonstrate that zinc speciation, not total zinc concentration, is toxic to aquatic organisms. Zinc and a series of chelators, sodium salts of various acids, were added to media containing algae. The free metal ion of zinc is shown to inhibit algal growth. (2 graphs, 24 references, 1 table)
