Nuclear structure at intermediate energies. Progress report, 1982-1983

During this reporting period Phase I of LAMPF Experiment E-33/336 (p vector p..-->..p..pi../sup +/n) was completed and a paper was submitted for publication. The preliminary results from the study of the spin dependence of p vector p vector total cross sections (E-504) were presented at the Spring APS Meeting. A new variable energy experiment, Phase II of E-33/336, the study of the cross sections and asymmetries of the reaction pp..-->..p..pi../sup +/n at 500 and 650 MeV, was carried out at LAMPF. In addition, Rice Faculty members participated in experiments to measure: (1) the analyzing power in the p vector p..-->..d..pi../sup +/ reaction for 725 less than or equal to E/sub p/less than or equal to 1000 MeV, (Saclay), and (2) T/sub 20/ in d vector p elastic scattering near 180/sup 0/ for 300 less than or equal to E less than or equal to 2300 MeV (Saclay); (3) iT/sub 11/ in ..pi..-d vector elastic scattering for 219 less than or equal to E/sub ..pi../ less than or equal to 294 (SIN); (4) high precision relative cross sections for elastic proton-proton scattering for 500 less than or equal to E/sub p/less than or equal to 600 MeV (SIN); and (5) A/sub xz/ in the reaction p vector p vector ..--> pi../sup +/d for 529 less than or equal to E/sub p/ less than or equal to 582 MeV (SIN). New, exciting results using the cloudy bag model with gluonic excitations have been obtained for the pionic couplings to nucleon and delta channels of nucleon resonances and on ..pi..-N spectroscopy in the intermediate energy region (approx. 1-2 GeV).
