Nitrogen, an oil field tool. [Reviews]

A review is given on new nitrogen techniques gaining wide use in Permian Basin oil fields, which may have application elsewhere. Nitrogen, being an inert gas, does not form acid with trace moisture. Nitrogen also has no corrosive properties. One of the chief uses of nitrogen is on drill-stem tests. In large acidizing and fracturing jobs, nitrogen has proved to be a valuable tool when commingled with the different treating fluids. It increases treating efficiency, aiding in cleaning up the formation by expansion of the gas. One of the oldest techniques is the use of nitrogen on cementing jobs to control the hydrostatic pressure on the annulus. Rocking dead wells to return them to production is another nitrogen process. Nitrogen can aid in completing wells, either single or multiple completions, by displacing drilling mud, brine, or other fluids from the well under controlled conditions. Other applications include high-pressure testing of blowout preventors, casing, tubing, and surface lines. Purging of lines and tanks to eliminate combustible mixtures and to prevent corrosion is another important use of nitrogen. Other uses include paraffin control, pressure setting of hydraulic packers, and fire fighting.
