Nitrogen is a proven material for use in various oil well applications. The first use of nitrogen was on drill stem tests. With the development of the cryogenic pump, liquid nitrogen came into its own. The cryogenic pump is designed to handle the extremely low temperature of the liquid nitrogen. Thus, tank trucks were designed which provide 2,000 or more gallons of liquid nitrogen. Applications include its use in drill stem tests, to protect the pipe, control reservoir entry, maintain packer seats, etc. In acidizing, nitrogen increases efficiency, and aids in cleaning up the formation. In cementing, it helps control the hydrostatic pressure on the formation. In cementing, it helps control the hydrostatic pressure on the annulus and in well completions, it is used for displacing drilling fluids from the well under controlled conditions. Other uses include pressure testing of blowout preventers, tubing, casing, and surface lines, as well as paraffin control, pressure setting of hydraulic packers, and fire fighting are some other uses.
