Bench scale development of the TRW process for cleaning coal (gravimelt process): Quarterly technical progress report for the period May 1986-July 1986

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7055775
The objective of this phase of the project is to shakedown and operate a modular bench scale plant for testing the Gravimelt Process for desulfurization and demineralization of coal and to evaluate the processing of three coals, Pittsburgh No. 8, Kentucky No. 11, and Middle Kittanning. The plant consists of four modules, each operated sequentially and independently. All modules of the Gravimelt process test circuit have now been constructed. This quarter, the evaporator module was completed and checked out. Also, shakedown was performed verifying operation of all components of the system and demonstrating that the evaporator can be operated to give better than design basis, completely dry, caustic at an operating temperature of less than 275/sup 0/C. In addition, laboratory scale studies were performed on regenerated caustic from each of the three program coals. These tests demonstrated that there had been no loss in desulfurization capability for the regenerated caustic. It is planned to complete the modular circuit operation by making evaporation module runs on regenerated caustic, and to perform recycle studies on regenerated caustic in the kiln utilizing fresh coal. The project requirements will be completed by preparation of a final report and other project report deliverables. 5 figs., 4 tabs.
