FCC gasoline motor octane number (MON) can be increased by using advanced catalyst formulations. The ideal MON catalyst is one that has a high silica-to-alumina ratio (SAR), O-4% rare earth (RE) loading for maximum MON and 6-10% RE loading for maximum MON barrels, and a selective alumina or silica-alumina matrix. The authors review the various factors (such as feedstock, operating variables, gasoline chemistry, and catalyst parameters) affecting MON. Within the framework of present knowledge and manufacturing technology, they attempt to formulate an advanced MON catalyst.
