This paper reports that many utility and industrial power companies are upgrading their generating stations to increase life cycles, generation efficiency, and operational control. Yadkin, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of America, is one such company which recently performed a complete upgrade of their Tuckertown Hydroelectric Station. This paper will address the following actions taken to replace/modernize equipment and improve monitoring and control capabilities of the Tuckertown plant: replacement of existing supervisory control equipment with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) equipment for monitoring and remote automatic/manual control, replacement of existing generator and station control/relay panels and associated devices, replacement of synchronizing equipment, replacement of voltage regulation and excitation systems, upgrade of the existing governors, maintenance/enhancement of protective relays and their protection schemes, and addition of miscellaneous plant monitoring.
