Three-pion reactions in dilepton production from a hadron gas

Kinetic theory formulae are derived for the dilepton production rate from processes of the type 1+2+3[r arrow][ital l][sup +][ital l][sup [minus]] and 1+2[r arrow]3+([ital l][sup +][ital l][sup [minus]]) in hadronic or partonic systems. The formalism is applied to three-pion reactions [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]], [pi][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup [plus minus]][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]], and [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] in a thermalized hadron gas. The dilepton mass spectra are compared to those from previously considered reactions at different temperatures. The three-pion processes amplify the [omega](783) and [phi](1020) peaks in the dilepton mass spectrum. The consequences for using resonance dileptons as a tool for measuring mean lifetime and temperature of hadronic fireballs are discussed.
