Wormser Engineering Inc. of Woburn, Mass. has manufactured a fluidized-bed combustor that has many advantages for most industrial users. The FBC can handle run-of-mine coals and because it stands only 14' high, it fits easily in most industrial plants. Wormser's FBC is novel in that it has dual-bed combustion. The coal is burned in a lower bed containing steam tubes and SO/sub 2/ is collected in an upper chamber containing dolomite. SO/sub 2/ emissions can be controlled to 1.2 lb/mm Btu using Ca/S mole ratios of approximately 2.5 to 1. Desulfurization efficiencies of 95% to 97% are possible. Another feature of the unit is a burner that allows the facility to start up within 45 minutes. The burner uses less auxiliary fuel than that required in other FBCs to reach 1100/sup 0/F because of its quick startup time. Once that temperature is reached, coal is then fed into the FBC until the temperature climbs to 1600/sup 0/F. This takes about six minutes.
