Coal combustor retrofits to gas- and oil-fired boilers

This paper describes a newly developed pollution-free, automatic coal burner that is designed to operate in conjunction with either new or existing gas or oil boilers. The heart of the system, the Wormser Grate, is an atmospheric, fluidized-bed coal combustor (FBC) of second-generation design, which overcomes the drawbacks of earlier FBC systems. Some of these problems: poor operating reliability, inefficient coal combustion, incomplete desulfurization, large equipment size, and the systems' inability to be retrofitted to existing boilers.
