Method for the estimation of pore pressure within a subterranean formation

This patent describes a method for estimating pore pressure in an underground formation being drilled with a drill string to form a borehole. It comprises monitoring the value of a first parameter to detect an influx of fluid from the formation into the borehole; monitoring the value of a second parameter indicative of the weight of the drill string while the drill bit is generally adjacent to the formation; monitoring any changes in the value of the second parameter while the drill string is being raised to the surface; correlating the first and second parameters and determining the change in value of the second parameter; and estimating the pore pressure of the formation from the determined change in value of the second parameter.
