Combustion of low-grade material in fluidized beds

Combustion of waste materials and fuels of low calorific value in fluidized combustion systems has been shown by tests on a series of experimental combustors up to 3 sq ft to be efficient and economic, with minimal pollution. The materials tested include sewage, oil residue, lignites, chars, and wet tailings from coal washing, which consists of a slurry of coal, clays, and water. By burning the coal content in a fluidized bed, water evaporates, leaving a dry granular material which is stable and safe for tipping or which may have a commercial use as a refractory material and artificial aggregate. Pilot-scale tests and design studies on full-scale units are used to illustrate the design parameters and engineering requirements of a satisfactory plant, particularly the feed intake system design and particle size control. The pioneering work on the fluidized combustion of coal carried out by the U.K. National Coal Board is now being made available by Combustion Systems Ltd. to help solve problems arising in the combustion of these other fuels.
