Kinetics of the electrosynthesis of a hydrous zirconium dioxide sol
Sol-gel methods of preparing inorganic adsorbents based on the oxides of zirconium, titanium and other polyvalent metals have been developed intensively. The essence of the method discussed resides in removing hydrochloric acid from an aqueous solution of a salt by decomposing it to Cl/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/ at the electrodes. It is possible to prepare hydrous zirconia sol electrochemically in a diaphragmless electrolyzer, which simplifies the process. Shown are polarization curves for hydrogen evolution, and polarization of a Pt cathode in a HZD sol having an atomic ratio as a function of the period of thermal treatment. The experimental data show that the electrolysis of a solution of zirconium oxychloride is limited by the cathodic process. Also, that on reaching a critical current density the slope of the polarization curve alters.
