A computer simulation of the dynamics of corona on transmission lines has been established, and implemented into a previously developed corona model, thus making possible its accurate application to fast transient conditions. The model is based on a macroscopic approach to the physical phenomena involved. Results obtained with the improved model have been compared to experimental published results for lightning surges, obtained with different conductors and atmospheric conditions. The model has shown to be adequate for an accurate simulation of the corona charge-voltage diagrams to be used in surge propagation studies, namely showing the dependence of the threshold voltage upon the surge front rate of rise.
