This paper reports that the Palisades Stream Generator Replacement Project involved the first replacement of two Combustion Engineering 810 MWe steam generators that had been plaguing Consumers Power Company's (CPCo) Palisades Nuclear Plant since initial operation in 1972. This project also involved the first construction opening cut into the wall of a pre-stressed/post-tensioned concrete containment structure of a U.S. nuclear plant. The sequence of events during the removal process will be described. Intensive planning, combined with input from CPCo and the use of mockups to train the work force in a simulated radiological environment, was instrumental in achieving schedule performance and setting a new U.S. record for the lowest accumulated radiation exposure during a steam generator replacement.
