Steam generator replacement at Doel-3

The three steam generators at the Doel-3 nuclear power plant in Belgium were replaced in 44 days (July 8-August 21, 1993), less than the 51 days scheduled for the job. That duration started with the cutting of the steam generator hot and cold legs on the primary side and the cutting of the secondary side, and ended when the new SGs were closed on the primary and secondary sides. Electrabel, owner-operator of the unit, attributed the reduced length of the placement outage to several factors: In-depth preparation between 1990 and 1993, including detailed walkdowns during the 1991 and 1992 outages. An integrated computer system (which included a CAD model) used for scheduling, interference studies, and ALARA studies. Detailed follow-up of each activity through a daily revised schedule.
