Hopes high for Australia's Amadeus basin

The Amadeus basin is apt to prove one of the most significant hydrocarbon provinces in onshore Australia. This basin's great potential has been demonstrated by the high success ratio from the limited exploratory program performed between 1963 and 1973. Of the 17 wells drilled during that decade, 2 significant discoveries were made at Mereenie and Palm Valley, 6 had hydrocarbon shows, while the others were offically tagged as dry holes. The parameters for large accumulations of hydrocarbons are all present in the Amadeus basin. Speculation indicated excellent anticlinal structures have the potential to accumulate in the order of 500 million bbl of oil. Mereenie field has minimum recoverable reserves of 60 million bbl of oil and half a trillion cu ft of gas. Palm Valley field may have in-place reserves of 7 to 10 trillion cu ft of natural gas.
