The Mereenie field is located in the central W. part of the Amadeus Basin. Active drilling was started in the area in 1963. This led to the discovery of a large flow of natural gas at Mereenie in Feb. 1964. The Mereenie No. 1 well, drilled on the crest of the Mereenie Anticline, became the discovery well for the Amadeus Basin and was the first major petroleum discovery in the Northern Territory of Australia. The well started drilling in Mereenie Sandstone and penetrated the Stokes Shale before encountering the Stairway Sandstone at 2,570 ft. High pressure gas, which flowed at 300 Mcfd, was encountered in the Lower Stairway Sandstone. A drill stem test of the interval 3,486 to 3,983 ft produced an initial flow of 4.8 MMcfd (140,000 cu m daily) of wet gas from the Pacoota Sandstone. An open hole flow rate of over 11 MMcfd (314,000 cu m daily) was measured. Five wells drilled have proved an accumulation about 17 miles long and 2 miles wide with a gas column 1,400 ft thick and an oil column 355 ft thick.
