African Coal, Oil and Gas Corp. Ltd.'s plant, the world's only operating coal-based synfuel plant, converts coal by gasification to a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and by Fischer-Tropsch reaction into liquid fuels and chemicals. The only commercial tar sands operation is Great Canadian Oil Sands, Ltd.'s plant in Alberta which recovers 60,000 bbl/day of bitumen to produce 2600 tons coke, 45,000 bbl synthetic crude. Syncrude Canada Ltd., is planning a plant nearby to produce 50,000 bbl/day of synthetic crude, 35,000 bbl/day of specialty low-sulfur oils, and 5000 bbl/day of naphtha. USSR's oil shale industry, located mostly in Estonia and devoted chiefly to electric power generation, uses generally obsolete processing techniques to produce 450-Btu gas and fuel oil. China, a leader in oil shale production, has extensive reserves and 2 known processing plants: the Fushun, Manchuria, plant producing an estimated 40,000 bbl/day crude shale oil in 1962 using shale pyrolysis in eighty 100-ton capacity retorts and the Mowming plant, Kwangtung Province, with a 1 million ton/yr capacity. In Brazil, Petrobras has operated a series of pilot plants and evaluated 2 oil shale deposits. A 2500 ton/day prototype unit now under construction 70 mi from Curitiba, State of Parana, will use the Petrosix process adapted from the US Bureau of Mines Gas Combustion Process.
