Although Brazil contains several oil-shale occurrences, the Permian Irati Formation deposit is the most promising for commercial exploitation. The Petrosix process was developed by Petrobras for retorting Irati oil shale. Favorable results of evaluations stimulated the construction of a semi-commercial prototype plant, which is in an advanced stage of construction and erection at Sao Mateus do Sul, Parana State. Prototype plant operation for mining and process studies is scheduled for the end of 1971 and is sized to process 2,200 metric tons/day and to produce 1,000 bbl of oil, 17 metric tons of sulfur, and 36,500 cu m of fuel gas. Commercial plant evaluation indicates a $239-million investment will be needed to mine and process 108,000 metric tons/day of shale to produce shale oil, sulfur, LPG and fuel gas.
