Electron irradiations of thin Cu-Be films near displacement threshold show that the types of Frenkel pairs produced depend on recoil direction. Irradiation along {l angle}100{r angle} very strongly favors the production of close pairs that anneal in substages I{sub A} and I{sub B}, whereas irradiation along {l angle}110{r angle} produces mostly substage I{sub C} close pairs. Substage I{sub D} indicates the recombination of mobile defects; the larger Frenkel pair separation due to far-reaching replacement collision sequences along {l angle}110{r angle}, as opposed to {l angle}100{r angle}, is reflected in a shift of the peak recovery rate to higher temperature.
