The EPA's restriction on SO/sub 2/ emissions from electric power plants is discussed in relation to rising inflation and energy prices, short energy supplies and our reliance on imported oil, unemployment, and our deficit in balance of trade. This restriction requires electric power plants to either install stack gas scrubbers, or buy low-sulfur fuel. Emission rate is not an indication of pollution rate. Evidence is presented which shows that practically none of the SO/sub 2/ emitted from one large power company comes down to earth as SO/sub 2/ pollution. Most power companies employ much the same design criteria for stacks. The costs of the EPA restriction on power plant SO/sub 2/ emissions are presented. The EPA has caused a doubling of the cost of residential electricity in only the ten years it has been in operation.
