The Chemplex site is in Clinton County within 5 miles of Clinton, Iowa, and includes a landfill, a waste water treatment plant, and an adjacent facility which manufactures high and low density polyethylene. From 1968 to 1978 the landfill area was used for disposal of various plant wastes including black oily sludge, scrap polyethylene, construction debris, and carbonate sludge. The debutanized aromatic concentrate (DAC) area, which consists of a pit and DAC product storage and loading areas, was contaminated by DAC spillage. In 1987, waste was reportedly removed from the pit and disposed of in a RCRA permitted landfill. Wastes and spills have contaminated the soil and ground water underneath the landfill and DAC areas. This first operable unit will address the plumes of ground water contamination. A subsequent operable unit remedy for the site will address the cleanup of soil and other ground water remediation that may be required. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including benzene, toluene, xylenes, TCE, and PCE; and other organics including carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic PAHs.
