The study is based on the findings of the comprehensive studies of the Katun` River Basin (in the Gornyi Altai Mountains) interpreted in the light of modern concepts of mercury migration patterns in water bodies to predict the mercury behavior in the Katun` Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir. It is demonstrated that, under the specific reservoir conditions, including the relatively small flooded area, low organic matter content in the flooded soils, high water exchange rate and great depth, low temperatures and the hydrochemical regime features, substantial annual coverage of the bed with the river mineral suspended matter, possible ultra-oligotrophy, no intensive methylation processes, and mercury bioaccumulation are expected.
