The results of hydrogeochemical investigations in the Katun` River Basin are presented. The investigations were conducted under the program of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences to predict the environmental aftereffects of the construction of the planned Katun` Hydropower Plant. The hydrogeological conditions, ground-water chemical composition, and spatial and temporal regularities of mercury distribution in ground water are discussed. The mercury balance in the main components of the water-rock system (primary rocks, ground water, and secondary minerals) is determined, using a special technique; the mercury behavior after the probable construction of a reservoir is predicted.
