Process for beneficiation of coal and associated apparatus

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7019733
This patent describes a process for Separating coal particles from mineral mater in a raw coal feed material containing the coal particles and the mineral matter. It comprises: mixing the raw coal feed material with an aqueous amine solution to create an aqueous slurry, introducing the aqueous slurry into a lower portion of a flotation cell, charging the lower portion of the cell with gas containing carbon dioxide so as to create bubbles, creating turbulence in the aqueous slurry by the charging of the gas, so that the coal particles attach to the bubbles, reducing the size of the bubbles by about 50% to 90% as the bubbles rise from the lower portion of the cell to the upper portion of the cell by operating the cell under conditions such that the carbon dioxide chemically reacts with the amine solution, transporting the coal particles by means of the rising bubbles to an upper portion of the cell, and removing the coal particles from the upper portion of the cell.
